What it means
Identity verification is the process of confirming that a person is who they claim to be before or during an employment, onboarding, access, payroll, benefits, or compliance workflow. In HR software, identity verification may include document collection, employment eligibility checks, background-check handoffs, single sign-on, identity proofing, account matching, audit history, and controls that protect sensitive personal information.
Why buyers should care
Identity workflows affect trust, privacy, security, hiring speed, and compliance evidence. A product may verify documents, authenticate users, or simply route information to another provider, and those are different responsibilities. Buyers should understand what the software validates, what a partner validates, what HR must review, and how exceptions are handled.
Evaluation checks
Review supported documents, data fields, retention settings, role-based access, audit logs, employee consent, vendor subprocessors, integration handoffs, and correction workflows. Ask how the system handles mismatches, expired documents, re-verification, former employees, duplicate profiles, and sensitive exports. Strong identity verification protects people data while preserving enough evidence for review and support.
