What it means
An employee integration handoff is the transfer of employee data, status, task ownership, or workflow outcomes between HR systems and adjacent tools. Common handoffs include ATS to HRIS, HRIS to payroll, HRIS to identity management, benefits to payroll, onboarding to IT, performance to compensation, and case management to reporting.
Why buyers should care
Handoffs are a major source of employee data problems. A workflow may look complete in one system while another system has stale records, missing fields, or failed tasks. Buyers should evaluate whether the product makes handoff status, mapping rules, sync failures, retries, and ownership visible. A reliable handoff reduces manual reconciliation and prevents employee-facing mistakes.
Evaluation checks
Review integration logs, field mapping, source-system priority, effective dates, error handling, retries, duplicate detection, permissions, and downstream task creation. Ask how the system handles failed updates, manager changes, delayed approvals, and former-employee records. Good handoffs show what moved, what did not, and who needs to act.
